Trauma & Grief Recovery

Voice Hands Heart - Service - Body - TRAUMA & GRIEF RECOVERY SESSIONSAt Voice Hands Heart the work of trauma recovery and grief and loss care is especially near and dear to us. As therapists and guides we believe in the practice of holding a safe and sacred space for individuals to process experiences of pain, so that they can heal and grow. For this reason, each of our modalities can be individually adapted to support trauma recovery.

Trauma is an intense life experience often involving fear, pain, confusion, chaos, or loss. The experience of trauma overwhelms the senses and becomes too much to handle. As a result, we often experience post-traumatic stress symptoms physically, mentally, emotionally & spiritually.

Often symptoms show up after a traumatic event including: anxiety, panic attacks, flashbacks, nightmares or difficulty sleeping, avoidance of stimuli related to the situation, etc. In cases of grief and loss, we often experience intense emotional releases of pain that are difficult to process, as well as fatigue, lethargy, lack of appetite, and disorientation. Experiences of trauma and intense grief are also energetically stored in the body as our bodies often brace and engage gripping patterns to protect and support us in a moment of extreme challenge.

Thus, in addition to emotional duress, after a traumatic experience we can also experience headaches, backaches, muscle weakness, difficulty focusing, numbing, swelling, and complete disconnection from our body.
Trauma therapy involves creating an atmosphere of consistency and safety to allow us to relax and recover. This allows a healing process to unfold in which we gently revisit memories of the experience in small tolerable amounts over time, so that we can integrate and release the trauma, and restore our mind and body to homeostasis.

At Voice Hands Heart, Lindsay offers weekly and bi-monthly trauma therapy sessions to help individuals process memories and engage healing so they can live more fully in the present moment. Lindsay is often asked how she can possibly stay in the field of trauma recovery. She does so because she views trauma recovery as hope-filled, courageous, dynamic & life-giving.

In many situations, traumatic experiences either involve the presence of unsafe, unwanted touch or isolation and the absence of nurturing touch. Thus, most individuals who have experienced a traumatic event struggle to find spaces where they can experience healing touch that is safe, therapeutic, and boundaried. At Voice Hands Heart, Jeremy offers weekly and bi-monthly trauma-sensitive massage for the primary purpose of helping individuals learn how to receive and participate in healthy touch again. Jeremy has specially developed massage sequences designed to help individuals process grief in a nurturing, comforting way. Frequently Asked Questions

This is a common misconception about trauma therapy. Trauma therapy is actually less about remembering events exactly as they happened, and more about processing the emotional impact of the event and the beliefs you have created about yourself as a result. It’s common for people to experience memory gaps or time periods during which they cannot recall specific pieces of information and when this happens we offer compassion and acceptance.
Trauma sensitive massage involves a lot of communication in which both client and practitioner talk about touch that feels acceptable to the client. With client permission, trauma recovery massage often involves the use of vocal sound healing and mantras that have been found to support trauma or grief recovery. Trauma sensitive massage often involves soft or gentle touch, as well as motions to activate the parasympathetic side of the body and rock the body into a state of ease.
